A Guide to Picking the Perfect Engagement Ring

Susie Lee, our bespoke manager, has put together a little write up with handy tips on
what to consider when choosing the 'perfect' engagement ring.

So, you’ve found the one, asked her father for her hand in marriage, planned the perfect proposal, now you just need the perfect engagement ring! There can be a lot of pressure surrounding this purchase, but getting it right doesn’t have to be a nightmare! I’ve put together a few handy tips to help you get the ball rolling.

Choosing the perfect engagement ring is really all about finding out what she likes. For this, you can take a cue from jewellery she already owns. Does she prefer dainty or bold pieces?  Does she favour white gold, yellow gold or maybe a mix of both?  Also, how does she react to other women’s engagement rings? Are glitzy stones her thing or is she drawn to subtle and intricate detailing? If you’re still unsure, why not call in the assistance of her girlfriends or female relatives (only if they can be trusted with your secret!!) you’ll soon be able to glean a pretty clear picture of her likes and dislikes.

There are also a few practical points to consider. If she enjoys sports and an active lifestyle, you might want to go for a band that’s robust and has some texture - to blend any scratches or scuffs that will naturally happen over a lifetime of wear. The setting of stones is also an important detail to think about. A bezel or rub-over setting is the most secure and least catchy, whereas claw settings allow more light through to the stone - allowing them to look their most sparkly.

Once you know what you’re looking for, it’s a good idea to establish a clear budget. Ignore all the rhetoric telling you to spend a certain number of months salary - stick with what you can afford and what feels right. In the end, it’s not the amount of money you spend that matters, but the time and thought that goes into purchasing her ring.

When buying the ring, it also helps to know her ring size. The best way to do this is to have a ring she already wears professionally measured - this is often quite tricky if you want to maintain the surprise factor. But definitely worth it to avoid any awkward proposal issues! And of course, once you’ve popped the question and the cats out of the bag, we’re more than happy to make any alterations so her ring fits perfectly. This works best with a visit to our studio workshop, so a professional measurement can be taken, and combined with a tour of the workshop where her ring was made!
