About Alex Monroe
Alex Monroe jewellery is synonymous with a very British sense of style. It is feminine, delicate and quirky, but above all consistently wearable.
Now a much loved brand world-wide, each and every piece is individually designed and handmade in England by Alex and his team.
Alex grew up in the countryside, in the wilds of Suffolk in a big old house surrounded by nature. He lived a life of adventure in rivers and forests, roaming freely in nature’s playground.
In the years to come, this idyllic but eccentric childhood would shape Alex’s jewellery. His love for the natural world continues to provide an inspiration. A fondness for the eccentricities of Englishness provides a touch of humour and nostalgia. A fascination with the intricacies of making things ensures superb craftsmanship.
After training at the Sir John Cass School of Art in London, Alex created his first collection in 1987. His aim was to produce excellent quality jewellery, which was originally designed, hand made and well priced. This was jewellery made to be worn and made to be loved. These values remain unchanged to this day.
In 2014 Two Turtle Doves, a memoir of making things was published by Bloomsbury in which Alex writes about his journey and a life of making things.
Alex hand-makes all of his original designs using traditional jewellery techniques. He will often fashion his own tools to help with the creation of a new piece. He has a wonderful ability to take precious metal and imbue it with a natural quality. A feather floating on the breeze, a bumblebee buzzing amongst the flowers, or perhaps battered old suitcase weary of so much travel. The possibilities are endless…
Throughout a long and distinguished career, Alex has collaborated with a dazzling and diverse array of partners from Buckingham Palace to Nike, The Victoria and Albert Museum to Anthropologie, or Penhaligon's, the Goring or Coco de Mer, Kew Gardens… The list is as long as the jewellery is diverse, but always in Alex’s instantly recognisable style.
Long standing partner Liberty of London say of Alex, "We are delighted to collaborate with such an individual and eclectic designer who truly embodies Liberty’s ethos and artistic heritage."
