Alex Monroe jewellery is synonymous with a very British sense of style. It is feminine, delicate and quirky, but above all consistently wearable.

Now a much loved brand world-wide, each and every piece is individually designed and handmade in England by Alex and his team of expert jewellers. Inspired by nature and nostalgia, every piece has a tale to tell…and the story continues with you.

About the Maker

Alex grew up in the countryside, in the wilds of Suffolk in a big old house surrounded by nature. He lived a life of adventure in rivers and forests, roaming freely in nature’s playground.

After training at the Sir John Cass School of Art in London, Alex created his first collection in 1987 to critical acclaim.  His intention was to produce excellent quality jewellery, which was originally designed, hand made and well priced. This was jewellery made to be worn and made to be loved and these values remain unchanged to this day.

Alex's Inspiration

Alex’s love for the natural world continues to provide a key source of inspiration…while a fondness for the eccentricities of Englishness provides a touch of humour and nostalgia.  All of Alex's collections begin life as a flickers of ideas, captured in his trusty sketchbook.

Above all though, it's the journey a piece of jewellery goes on after it's left our workshop and the stories we hear from generations of wearers, that inspires Alex to keep pushing his craft 30 years on.

The Workshop

With architects for parents, Alex always dreamt of building his very own workshop from the ground up…and this was realised back in 2016 with the opening of our Bermondsey Workshop, poetically situated in London’s historic centre of industry. Designed in collaboration with DSDHA and recently a winner of RIBA's 2018 London Architecture Awards.

Here our team of expert jewellers, hand make and finish each and every piece of Alex Monroe jewellery.

The Making

After Alex has completely finished hand-crafting his original design, this special "master" begins it's journey... Firstly, it needs to be cast at our trusted partners and then from here we're ready to start making finished pieces...

This is when our workshop team come into their own, hand-finishing each piece; from cleaning the castings, to carefully soldering elements together to hand setting the stones and lastly; plating, polishing and quality checking. Ensuring each one meets the highest of standards and is ready for it's new owner.

Alex's Original

It all begins with a sketch... but a design only truly comes to life at the bench when Alex is at his most creative.

Giving a window into this exciting stage, the popular Monroe Mumbles series was born... where Alex talks through and demonstrates the making of some of his most iconic designs. In this feature, Alex reveals the meaning behind his classic Dragonfly Necklace...
