Stockist interview : Eighty Seven

16 Potter Street Melbourne DE738DW

01332 864 484

We sat down for a quick chat with Amy Cook, the owner / creative director (and 'everything in between') of Eighty Seven. Our lovely stockist located in Derbyshire.

How would you spend your perfect day off?

I really enjoy spending a day off exploring the beautiful Derbyshire Dales and surrounding countryside. There is so much beauty and always somewhere new to discover. Time spent with my friends and family is also very precious to me.

What is your ultimate go-to film?

I am going to have to listen to the inner 80s child in me and say Mannequin. This film sums up all my favourite memories and feelings from my childhood. I think I have seen it over 100 times with my best friend on rainy Saturday afternoons, sleep overs and sometimes just for the love of it! I still have it on VHS……

Your favourite read?

My partner and I created a book of photographs from our travels to India, America and South East Asia. The images in it capture the stunning scenery, amazing cultures and vibrant characters we encountered on the way and we love reflecting back on those experiences.

Favourite food?

No brainer and for those that know me well will not need to read another word… INDIAN food without a shadow of doubt. Packed full of vibrant flavour and such a variety of dishes, depending on the region of origin. I have to admit that when, my other half and I decided to go travelling, we both knew the first stop would be India and that was for the love of their food. LOVE.

Birds or Bees?

Both, they make the world go round.

Favourite getaway?

A Greek island, which one? It’s a secret. A soon as I land on this beautiful island, I instantly relax. Over 60 beaches to discover, great food, wine, sunny skies and fabulous company. Perfect.

Favourite biscuit?

I am a dunker and have been from an early age. It has to be the classic Chocolate Hobnob.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

How would you describe your shop?

A little slice of unique loveliness, selling women’s fashion and statement home accessories. I have worked hard to unearth quirky designers that bring something classic, yet with an edge to women’s wardrobes, at a price that doesn’t break the bank. I am a big believer in feeling good about yourself and I like to think I have a hand in helping ladies feel that way.

 What’s special about your store?

I personally select the designers that we stock from here in the UK and beyond. We work together to ensure the lines I select for Eighty Seven do not focus on huge quantities, providing variety and exclusivity to my customers. It’s all about the personal touch here, everything is centered around our amazing customers. I take notes with me of customer requests and favoured styles when buying new stock, and even arrange evening appointments in store for some of our busier customers enabling them to shop around their lifestyle.

Are you easy to find?

I would say so. My lovely red geraniums at the shop front catch peoples eye. Eighty Seven is situated on Potter Street just off the High Street in Melbourne, a great location providing exclusivity and privacy to the store.

What’s the best thing about your location?

Melbourne is a beautiful Derbyshire market town surrounded by Grade II listed homes, lots of history and thriving independent businesses. I feel proud to be a part of the community here. It is a popular town that attracts many visitors looking for a lovely day out browsing shops and grabbing a coffee or bite to eat in the cafes/ restaurants. It is definitely the place to visit for savvy shoppers looking to discover unique items and special gifts that cannot be found in high street stores and shopping centres.

Any other attractions in your area?

Derbyshire is a wonderful county in the UK, full of little market towns making for a great day out not to mention the fantastic walks/ hikes over the Derbyshire Dales and Peak District. Melbourne is also close to neighboring village Ticknall which is the home to Calke Abbey, a stunning National Trust stately home and country estate. They hold some fabulous events throughout the year from open-air cinema nights to illuminated Christmas tree walks.

What attracted you to Alex Monroe Jewelry?

It makes a statement! The pieces are so beautiful and quirky, but made to such a detailed, high standard that the price point makes them great value investments.

I like to wear jewelry and what I like about Alex Monroe is that I can wear it to any occasion and it always feels special.

Do you have a favorite piece?

I adore the rings, but for me it still has to be the classic bumblebee. I just love the way it lies on my neckline and it makes me feel happy.

Any tips for customers buying Alex Monroe?

It’s a sentimental special purchase for me so when you come to choose the piece that is right for you, buy what you absolutely LOVE.

Do you have any happy stories about any Alex Monroe customers you’ve had?

A lady came into the shop this summer who was a few weeks away from having a baby and she fell in love with the jewellery. A week later her husband came into the shop and described his wife to me, I showed him which necklace she loved and bought it as a surprise for the day she gave birth to their baby.
