Plastic Free February

It's #PlasticFreeFebruary

As a brand with nature at it’s heart, we have always been mindful about our impact on the environment and it’s inhabitants.Every piece of Alex Monroe Jewellery has always and will forever be handmade in England and our Oceans Collection was created in support of @friends_earth, raising money and awareness for their #DrasticonPlastic campaign!

This February through our social media we talked about a few of the steps we are taking as a business on our journey to becoming the most ethical and sustainable organisation we can be. Our incredible community responded in kind, filling us with inspiration in regards to the steps leaps and bounds they are taking in their own lives.

Everyone who works at Alex Monroe shares the same values and we are all doing our bit to reuse, recycle and be responsible in light of our aim to be free of virgin plastics by 2021. Read on to find out the steps we are taking to get there…

Packaging

This year we've switched the fabric lining our luxury Gift Boxes to BAMBOO - a more environmentally friendly alternative to cotton or synthetic materials! Bamboo is highly renewable, resilient and toxin free. Growing at up to 61cm a day with little water and zero chemicals, it also regenerates from it's own roots in virtually all environments. This means no need for invasive replanting! As with our jewellery, our wish is that you continue to make use of your AM gift boxes for years to come in whichever creative way you choose. Our strong and high quality bamboo lining helps make this a reality!

Our Team

Lauren, Boutique Manager London Bridge Boutique

'I am the first to admit that I was buying plastic water bottles for far too long. I now have a reusable bottle. If we all make small changes to our lifestyle, we are helping the environment one step at a time!'

Amy, Bespoke Design Apprentice Design

’In the design workshop we reuse the packaging from our special deliveries whenever we can. We always reuse the little cases that carefully transport our precious gemstones. Any old ones I give them a new life as mini paint pots for my client sketches!’

Matteo, 18ct Gold Production Benchworker Workshop

'Tiny sealable plastic bags are an unfortunate staple of the jewellery industry to protect again tarnishing - in the production workshop every plastic bag is reused until it is no longer fit for purpose. They are then recycled with super recyclers First Mile.’

Alex Monroe Creative Director

With a passion for the natural world that threads through his craft, Alex has spent 30 years being mindful of his environmental impact, and is always the first to take his own plate and storage containers to cafes and supermarkets to avoid unnecessary plastic packaging (Highlighted in his 2019 Drastic on Plastic mission told here in his own words) This year he collected all the plastic he used in February, with the aim to use less than 1 bag!

Plastic Petition to the UK Government

Plastic is choking our oceans and killing marine life. As the plastic breaks down into tiny pieces it’s consumed by marine animals. All this plastic pollution means a cocktail of harmful chemicals can be passed up the food chain. Plastic is even getting into our food and water supplies.

We need the government to introduce a plan now that:

  • starts with phasing out non-essential single-use plastics now
  • commits to tackling trickier plastics, like in clothes and car tyres, as soon as possible
  • maintains quality of life for people who need plastic, and doesn't cause worse environmental problems.

Please sign our petition to tell the UK government that we need a new law to phase out plastic pollution.
