From the beginning Alex and our team have always been mindful to ensure social and environmental consideration is always at the heart of our business. From our London Boutiques and our purpose-built Design & Production Workshops, all the way through to our Packaging and People.
Our Boutiques
Located in London Bridge and Covent Garden, our Boutiques were designed by Alex and our architects DSDHA, with a central focus on sensitive and responsible design.
Aligned with our Handmade in England ethos, we additionally collaborated with many small-scale British makers and craftspeople across all aspects of the construction of our Boutiques. For example, our lighting was made in Yorkshire by technical performance and Circular Economy specialists, Factory Lux, whilst all our counters and cabinets were handmade in Devon by artisan wood workers 2Detail. (Their brilliant bespoke service meant that we could recreate an old jewellery bench Alex had seen in the Birmingham Jewellery Quarter Museum).
The array of curious props you see in our display cabinets are either vintage, specially sourced from antique markets, or hand-made by our wonderful Visual Merchandiser.
Our Buildings
Our RIBA award-winning London Bridge Design Studio and Bermondsey Production Workshop were also collaborations between Alex and DSDHA, with social and environmental consideration and respect of the local area all essential factors in their pioneering design and construction. For example, our London Bridge Design Studio was structurally constructed entirely from prefabricated cross laminated timber panels that are left exposed on the inside, the use of which has removed 27.1 tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere.
Jewellery Boxes & Gift Bags
We have worked closely with our packaging company Wrapology, to develop our gift packaging to be as sustainable as possible. Our boxes are lined and padded with organic bamboo fabric, and the paper is FSC certified and uncoated for recycling - though we of course hope you keep and use your box for years to come! Our bags are made from FSC certified and uncoated paper (including the handles) to be both sturdy for reuse and completely recyclable.
Promotional Materials
Our brand leaflets and receipt wallets are made by Gemini Print - considered one of the leading eco-printers in the UK. Where we occasionally print promotional materials elsewhere, we ensure these are always printed on FSC certified, recyclable paper.
Waste & Recycling
We work with pioneering, environmental organisation First Mile in the management of our waste and recycling. First Mile offers over 20 separate recycling services, and even sorts all general waste to pull out any possible recyclables. Anything that cannot be recycled is transported to an Energy from Waste facility, where it's safely incinerated - a process which prevents waste ending up in landfill, whilst generating electricity and heat that power homes in the UK. By-products residues are used in the construction industry.
Responsible Consumption
As a small business, having a dedicated responsibility expert on the team simply isn’t viable. So instead we hire people at all levels that care about our world and will help thread that passion and awareness into everything that we do - including responsible consumption at both a personal and business level. Each year we encourage our team and wider community to take part in a ‘Plastic Free at Home and Work’ month-long initiative - where we all work hard to cut down on personal plastic waste, reflect on opportunities to be more responsible at AM HQ, and challenge businesses we know could do things better!
Cycling & Transport
The majority of our team are keen cyclists, so much so that Southwark council installed extra cycle parking to accommodate us. Those of us who don’t cycle use London’s public transport system or walk to work!
